What is Extricom's corporate background?

Extricom was founded in mid-2002 and operated as a strategic research and development entity until early 2004. In 2004, the company began commercializing its deep patent portfolio (currently at 18 filed patents and 8 granted) into the enterprise WLAN offering that was first released in May 2005. Global sales and marketing began towards the end of 2005. Extricom has reached multi-million dollar annual revenues and built a distribution channel that now spans the Americas, Europe, and Japan. The company operates from principal offices in New York, London and Tokyo.

Does Extricom support the IEEE 802.11 standards?

The Extricom WLAN solution complies with the IEEE 802.11 standards family. With the final ratification of the IEEE 802.11n standard, all Extricom 802.11n products are now Wi-Fi CERTIFIED n™.

Will any Wi-Fi client work on the Extricom infrastructure?

The Extricom WLAN supports any Wi-Fi certified or 802.11 standards-compliant a/b/g/n wireless client.

Will the Extricom solution co-exist with other wireless LANs?

An Extricom WLAN solution is inherently designed to be a "good neighbor" in terms of sharing the unlicensed spectrum with other WLAN systems. The uplink/downlink diversity inherent to the Extricom WLAN system enables the Extricom switch to determine, on a packet-by-packet basis, which access point is best positioned to transmit to which wireless client within the deployment area of the WLAN. This automatically minimizes the impact of neighboring WLANs on the Extricom system and its associated wireless clients.

Can I manage the Extricom system centrally?

An individual Extricom WLAN switch can be managed using a web GUI through any standard web browser. Configuration and administration is simple to perform, and can be accomplished by IT staff after minimal training.

To manage multiple switches, Extricom offers the EXNM-2000, a comprehensive network management tool that enables System Administrators to manage any size of Extricom WLAN from a single interface. The EXNM-2000 can manage any Extricom switch and access point, providing easy, standards-based systems administration, configuration, and monitoring.

In addition, an Extricom WLAN can be integrated with any SNMP management application that may be present in a customer's environment.

Does the Extricom solution support standards-based security?

The Extricom WLAN solution supports the 802.11i security standard for authentication and encryption. Authentication is based on the 802.1X framework, which can utilize RADIUS or any other advanced authentication factors beyond username/password. Supported Upper Level Authentication (ULA) protocols include EAP-TLS, EAP-TTLS, EAP-MD5, PEAP, and LEAP. For privacy WPA with TKIP and the RC4 encryption engine, as well as WPA2, that includes the AES encryption engine, are supported. Each Channel Blanket supports up to 16 unique SSIDs, and role-based security is implemented based on VLAN mapping.

The Extricom solution supports all industry-standard security overlay solutions, including IPSec VPNs for end-to-end traffic encryption. The uninterrupted mobility supported by the Extricom Channel Blanket gives the system advantages over competing industry solutions based on traditional cell-planning. Since there is no need to re-associate and re-authenticate, a secure session (e.g. IPSec VPN) remains always connected as the client moves, something that is problematic in traditional WLAN systems.

Can a wireless system be as secure as a wired one?

An Extricom WLAN provides much the same level of security as wired solution. Today a wide range of technologies and options is available for enterprises, which means the crucial differentiator is not the availability of technology, but rather the deployment and successful operation of the appropriately selected technologies. The Extricom WLAN permits any security technology to be used in a fully mobile environment.

Does the Extricom system support LEAP?

Upper Level Authentication (ULA) protocols supported by the Extricom system include EAP-TLS, EAP-TTLS, EAP-MD5, PEAP, and LEAP. WPA with TKIP and the RC4 encryption engine, as well as WPA2, including the AES encryption engine, are supported.

In an Extricom WLAN, will security impact performance?

In the Extricom system, security functions are performed in a separate, dedicated hardware co-processor in the WLAN switch. This ensures that no matter how rigorous the security, including AES encryption, communications throughput is not affected.

Does the Extricom system support multiple SSIDs and VLANs?

Each Channel Blanket supports up to 16 unique SSIDs, and authentication can be configured on a per-SSID basis. When configuring the security profile for any given SSID, the user has the ability to support both AES and TKIP (negotiated to the highest level supported by the client), or to force either TKIP or AES. This configuration is done via either the switch management interface, or the EXNM-2000 Management platform.

Is rogue AP detection included in the Extricom WLAN?

Yes. Extricom offers built-in rogue AP detection, at no extra charge. One of the radios inside each of our multi-radio APs can be dedicated to security monitoring. Dedicated wireless LAN monitoring and intrusion detection can be delivered without the added cost of a separate security sensor overlay array.
